ABOUT ME

I used to negatively dwell over the fact that I am a first generation college student. My  low socioeconomic status, and poor public school education, put me in an unfair disadvantage when I entered the University of California at Santa Barbara. With a change of outlook – and major – I quickly learned that it was not my fault that I lacked the resources needed to excel. With no guidance, and little hope that I would thrive in this setting, I am proud to say I will be graduating in June 2018, receiving my B.A. in Sociology with a Professional Writing for Civic Engagement minor.

I personally enjoy a good read, swimming, and painting my nails every week. While interning at Partners in Education I discovered a new hobby: volunteering in classrooms to build personal connections with students. In addition, Partners in Education gave me the ability to work behind-the-scenes in achieving one of my personal goals to giving back to my community. It also proved to me the importance of providing additional resources for students to prepare them for life after the K-12 system. My plan for the future is to utilize my knowledge in social inequalities and writing skills to: help the youth from poor inner cities overcome the racial and socioeconomic disparities that await them in a higher educational setting.

I'm so excited to announce that this May, I have the privilege of traveling abroad to London and working with local community writers and activists, including a team of international faculty, and The Federation of Worker Writers and Community Publishers, to develop my own publication. In addition, I will contribute to the archive of these community writers at London Metropolitan University that attempts to capture the changing landscape of the working class living and working within a period of de-industrialization, immigration, and identity politics.
